How to Write the Perfect CV

Your Curriculum Vitae, CV or resume can be your biggest ally in finding you your next job or client. The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in financial losses globally, and led to a rise in unemployment. There are many people who have lost their jobs over the past year and are looking for new employment opportunities.

Creating the perfect CV can help you stand out from the rest and make your resume more attractive to recruiters, clients or potential employers. What are the things you should keep in mind when writing your CV? Read the article to find out!

Write a Strong Introduction or Personal Statement

Your personal statement defines who you are as a person and an employee. It needs to be strongly worded, well-written, and impactful. Keep it crisp but make sure it highlights all your major skills and key points you want your employer to see immediately. Your personal statement needs to intrigue and wow recruiters and potential clients.

Keep It Short

Nobody wants to read a 3-page CV! Keep that in mind when you’re writing it down. Keep all necessary details you want to mention, but don’t turn it into a mini-autobiography. Your CV needs to reflect your accomplishments, experience and education, but it doesn’t have to include every single project or task you’ve worked on in the last few years.

Tailor It to the Application

Customise your resume to the job application. This is often looked over because we get lazy, but it is really important you tailor your CV to the job you’re applying for. This way you can highlight all the skills you have that they are looking for, and make your application more favourable over the rest.

Avoid Using Tired Phrases

Everyone has read those CVs with power words sprinkled through them. Hardworking, dedicated, passionate… Those are the words we’re talking about. Use power words in your resume, but avoid using those that can be seen in the 100 other CVs the recruiter will go through. Make your CV as unique as possible.

Focus On the Results in Your Experience Section

Employers and clients are result-oriented not process-oriented. When you’re writing about what you have accomplished in your past jobs, mention the results. For example, if you are a social media manager, showcase the growth of the page and other relevant and meaningful insights of the pages you were managing during your time. When you highlight your accomplishments in the form of results, your CV will become a lot more enticing, and your future employer/recruiter/potential client will believe in your skill set as well.

Writing the perfect CV may seem like a daunting task, but you can always learn as you grow! Keep building on it and updating it to help you land the perfect job!
